Lillian Bassman

She is now one of the most great fashion photographers.

Lillian Bassman was born June 15, 1917 in Brooklyn New York.

She studied in Manhattan graduated 1933. She meet another photographer and husband Paul Rimmel, she got married in 1935.

She work most of her carrier life in Bazzar (junior and harpers) she help introducing some photographer like: Richard Avedon, Robert Frank, Louise Faurer and Arnold Newman. Her work was published most in bazzars by 1950-1965. She started doing black and white photography by the influence or better said the giddiness of a Russian named: Alexey Brodovitch.

After stopping for a while they find a suitcase full of all films, after the 90’s she starter taking pictures with a digital camera. She is using creative new work abstract color photography.

Her photography is appreciated by the contrast between white and black, geometric and the camera, angles and the finished photos have an particular style that make her, her own style.

The 92 year old artist’s best work are now collected into one book; Lillian Bassman Women by Deborah Solomon. The truly inspirational artist’s photographs have been published since her debut as a fashion photographer in the 1940s

BIO

She was born in July 28 of 1929, Southampton, New York. Trough out her life she developed her passion for equestrienne.

She got married on September 12, 1953 at St. Mary’s Church with (at the time) Senator John Kennedy. They had 4 children witch of those 1 was a stillborn, and the other had infant respiratory distress syndrome. Caroline (Married with Edwin Schlossberg they have 3 children) and John jr. (Married to Carolyne Bessette, Both died on a plane crash July 16, 1999)

In 1961 she became the first of the first ladies, she became a legend, for the fashion industry she has been an icon, her style and elegance, many people say that she was unique.

November 21, 1963 was the day of the assassination of the president John F. Kennedy, her third lost tragedy.

In October 20, 1968; she got married with Aristotle Onassis, it was a shock for the world but an understanding situation, she wanted to go away from the united states and the fact she thought it was dangerous for her and her children to stay in the USA.

The tragedy strikes again with an air crash Onassis son died, after that Aristotle was so depress he did not support that much of suffering and he died in Paris march 15, 1975.

She settle down been an editor, she always had the passion for writing and reading. Also she was a very important activist for the reservation of important and historical buildings in United States.

She was diagnose for a non-Hodgkin’s syndrome, she died on may 19, 1994, his son quoted she was surrounded by everyone and everything she loved.

 

IMPACT ON FASHION 

She first starter by the help of the French designer Oleg Cassini, her style made her unique, the loosely cut dress coats, sleeveless shift dress with a matching coat, sparingly, gloves, pearls, clutch handbags. She avoid the patterns and strong colors, she used soft pastels.

 

By the time she became Jacki O. she added the over size sunglasses, outsize bags, wide leg pantsuits, large jackets, silk head scarves and some times she used jeans in public, she starter to be more eccentric and liberal, the colors and accessories change.

Her impeccable style and incredible mind of doing her own thing gave her the eternity of style.
